Computational fluid dynamics modelling of boundary roughness in gravel-bed rivers : an investigation of the effects of random variability in bed elevation

Results from a series of numerical simulations of two-dimensional open channel flow, conducted using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT, are compared with data quantifying the mean and turbulent characteristics of open-channel flow over 2 contrasting gravel beds. The aims of this study are : to assess the performance of the CFD model; to identify the limitations of the conventional wall function approach; to explore the potential for modelling intermediate-scale roughness effects using a random elevation model, and to address the wider implications of these results for the application of CFD models to natural gravel-bed channels.
