Description :
At least 4 attributes make the Mediterranean world indeed different and largely determine the nature of its soils: specific climate, its mountains, dust from the desert, and the long term effects of man. Space limitation allows only a brief discussion of each aspect, supported by salient references. The literature on these topics is vast and cannot be fully reviewed in this brief overview.
