This paper describes and explains the influence of climatic conditions on the present-day weathering processes, soils and mesoscale topography across the western edge of the south Indian shield, with special reference to the southern region of the Karnataka Plateau. In the light of these interpretations, some tenets of climatic and general geomorphology in the Tropics, which have become engrained in the literature, are revisited.
