This paper reports some of the main African findings of a comparative research project. The core sources are five major overview papers which deal with major areas of Africa. The importance of urban research must be understood in the context of a severe multi-faceted crisis. Cities no longer fit into the restructured global economy, and their capacity to maintain basic infrastructure and social services has been impaired.
