Interdependent industrialization : Japan, Indonesia and the Asahan Project

Auteurs :
AIRRIES, C.
KOHNO, T.

Description :
Based upon bilateral cooperation between Japanese and Indonesian governments, the Asahan joint venture project in North Sumatra in principle affords each country mutual economic benefit. The AA. examine the spatial processes explaining both interests in the development of this aluminium smelter project. The economic impact of Indonesian and North Sumatran economies is then examined. Because of its poor economic performance, the AA. identify various economic forces which reduce the competitiveness of Indonesia's largest resource-based industrial venture.
