On the Ballasplaat intertidal mud flat pollution is not uniform, due to varying physico-chemical conditions (essentially variable redox profiles). The transportation of heavy metals across the sediment water interface is very much depending upon the physicochemical conditions of the sediment. - (Les AA.).
