Description :
The paper aims to develop some of the issues raised in Hart's research by looking specifically at the issue of children's competence in relation to the ability of children to negociate public space alone safely, and in doing so to make the concept of children's competence more explicit in geography. The material is based on interviews carried out with parents of children aged 8-11 in the UK and on focus group discussions with children about their experiences of public space and how they get round the spatial restrictions imposed on them by adults.
