The AA. wish to situate the current discussions around development and the environment on an expansive canvas of intellectual and political-economic ferment, and to provide a broad context, stressing recent poststructural tendencies. Four dimensions of the environment-development relations are important: the debate on rationality, truth, and discourse; a mapping of development ideas; a debate within a broader political ecology; recent discussions of social and environmental movements.
