The limits to globalization : technology districts and international trade

Rational choice, collective action, technological learning

Auteur :
STORPER, M.

Description :
The increasing export specialization of advanced industrial nations cannot be explained by comparative advantage, nor by the new trade theory based on economies of scale. It must be due to technological or « absolute » advantages on the part of the specialized exporter. These advantages are product-based and renewed by learning. The export-oriented industries tend to be found in one or a few subnational regions. They are organized in « Technological districts ».
