Shifting river management toward salmon restoration in the Columbia River basin

Auteur :
MULLENS, J.B.

Description :
The Columbia River Basin is the site of a conflict over two resources : hydroelectricity and Pacific salmon. Since 1982, the Pacific Northwest Power Planning Council has endeavored to mediate the conflict by implementing a water budget measure to augment stream volume and velocity in the spring. Power generation has taken priority because the economic benefits derived from it are easily weighed and the water budget measure may not increase the survival rates of migrating salmonids. - (SLD)
