Afforestation, fire, and vegetation management in the East Bay Hills of the San Francisco Bay area

Auteur :
ROWNTREE, L.B.

Description :
Devastating fires destroyed much property in 1923 and 1991 in the hills above the bay cities of Oakland and Berkeley (California). In 1991, over 3 300 houses were destroyed, 25 people were killed and 5 000 people rendered homeless. A main reason for this firestorm was that exotic trees, many of them eucaplytus, were planted to replace the native grass and oak woodland. Discusses reasons for reforestation and the womplexities of managing vegetation to reduce the fire hazard. - (DWG)
