Self-organization and landscape evolution

Auteur :
PHILLIPS, J.

Description :
This article examines the question of geomorphic self-organization in the context of broad-scale, long-term landscape evolution. Geomorphic perspectives on self-organization are first briefly reviewed. Then, the necessary and sufficient conditions for a self-organizing geomorphic system are outlined. Examples are examined. Finally, two broad classes of landscape evolution, the cases of increasing and decreasing relief, are shown to differ fundamentally with respect to self-organization.
