Bagnold was the first to change the study of aeolian sand transport and sand dunes from descriptive to processes orientated. His book combines unique field observations in remote desert areas, with wind tunnel simulation experiments and physical process analysis of airflow. It is a landmark in geomorphology, by being an early precursor of a new attitude to research based on dynamic processes.
