The assessment of land degradation in developing rural areas of South Africa is often hampered by a lack of reliable data. Remote sensing data offers a reliable source of information. In a case study in the Sekgosese district in northern South Africa, the findings coincided with local community perceptions, although most people were unaware of the causes and effects of land degradation. - (AJC)
