An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the British education system and the place of geography is offered. It is suggested that post-apartheid South Africa has considerable opportunities for geographical education and concludes that Geography can play a vital role in areas such as development and environmental education, as well as promoting an understanding of social and cultural patterns and processes, all of which are highly topical in the South African context. - (AJC)
