Description :
This paper reviews the environmental impacts of hydroelectric development on fish in China. It describes the hydrological changes and the primary, secondary and tertiary impacts on fish. 4 large hydroelectric projects in central and eastern China were selected as the main focus of this review, namely the Xinanjiang, the Fuchunjiang, the Danjiangkou and the Gezhouba projects. These were chosen because the dams vary in location, height and effects on fisheries and they provide insights into the overall cumulative effect on fish resources of China's massive hydroelectric development plans.
