Description :
The AA. propose to use oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) of ground ice (ice cement, as well as segregated ice) for reconstruction of cold-season paleotemperature (Tc) in permafrost areas. The term cold season refers to the period when precipitation falls as snow. The mean isotopic composition of annual precipitation in polar regions is highly correlated with the mean annual air temperature near the ground surface and this robust correlation constitutes a solid basis for using ancient precipitation for paleotemperature reconstructions.
