Vegetation response to upper Pliocene Glacial/Interglacial cyclicity in the Central Mediterranean

A new detailed pollen record from the Semaforo section (the lower part of the Crotone series) is presented here and used to reconstruct the southern Italian paleoenvironments at a mountain site where various vegetation types may coexist in different altitude ranges. This record documents the dynamics of the vegetation at the beginnning of the Northern Hemisphere glaciations and rapid vegetation replacements related to climate. The vegetation history is then compared to global climatic changes expressed by the δ 18O record of site 607 in the North Atlantic.
