Weathering and morphogenesis in a mediterranean climate, Calabria, Italy

Description :
Deeply weathered plutonic rocks occur widely in the Sila Massif, Calabria, southern Italy. The AA. have chosen three representative weathering profiles developed on the hilltops as a natural laboratory to study the generation of sand-sized particles from in situ weathering of granite and granodiorite, under heavy leaching conditions. Although most of the study area can be regarded as a relict old continental surface, correlation between weathering profile mineralogy and texture and current climate suggests that the alteration process is still active under present-day conditions.
