Description :
The AA. first introduce the general assumptions, the mapping unit types, and the most commonly used hazard evaluation methods. They then discuss the experience gained from the application of GIS-based models of hazard and risk due to slope-failures over test areas in Central Italy, ranging in size from some tens to some thousands of square kilometers, and outline the potentials and pitfalls of the approach. In the light of the results obtained, data quality, type of terrain-unit and statistical models are critically evaluated. Lastly, general comments on data collection, model production and information transfer are addressed.
