Evidence for the occurrence of shallow, short-duration, middle to late Holocene lakes in the terminal playas of the Mojave River in southern California is presented. Then the AA. analyze and model the hydrology of the river and the playa/lake and reveal the anomalous synoptic climatology which causes regional extreme storms. Through the analysis and understanding of basin and regional hydroclimatology the AA. determine the nature of the hydroclimatic change that must have occurred in the region to produce these lakes. This research outlines a way to extract information on Holocene climates in hydrologic settings that demonstrate a unique cause and effect relationship.
