Description :
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that fractal analysis reveals systematic changes in the appearance of topography and near-surface structure and can be used to quantify systematic interrelationships between them. The study incorporates fractal analysis of topography, structural cross-sections and reflection seismic data of two area of the North American central Appalachian Mountains : one in the intensely deformed Valley and Ridge province and the other in the relatively undeformed foreland area of the Appalachian Plateau province.
