Description :
This paper gives a short review of the mass balance programme, which began in the spring of 1946, and the glacier front observations conducted as a part of the routine programme at the Tarfala Research Station. These 2 programmes have, together, yielded information about major glacier retreat during this century and also shown how sensitive the glacier response is to even small changes in climate.
