Description :
This paper will examine the Swedish programme of liming surface waters to remedy acidification damage as an example of the difficulties of applying a geographically generalized environmental policy to a specific region. After discussing the implications of geographic variation in water quality for the Swedish liming programme, this paper considers the proper application of the precautionary principle when dealing with remedial measures such as liming.
