Description :
Publication of the offshore geological maps, scale 1:500 000, by the British Geological Survey has allowed estimation of the volume of Quaternary sediments on and at the margin of the continental shelf. The incomplete nature of the data sources and the huge area involved means that various approximations have had to be made to produce the final values. The most significant of these (the proportion of the offshore glacial sediments which was deposited during the Devensian glaciation) are discussed in the text and some estimate is made of the range of errors involved.
