Every creed and party : town tenant protest in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Ireland

Auteurs :
GRAHAM, B.
HOOD, S.

Description :
The symbolic centre of the Home Rule movement was provided by the struggle for control of land. Although successful in gaining free sale of improvement for rural tenants, the legislation failed to grant similar rights to town tenants who began to mount a campaign of their own. It was subsumed within the nationalist-unionist schism. The gestation of urban tenant protest and the campaign for urban tenurial rights are examined. It shows how the nationalist issue negated this axis of political protest.
