Spatial patterns and causes of marble tombstone weathering in western Pennsylvania

Description :
The aim of this study is to investigate the regional spatial variation of Vermont marble tombstone weathering in southwestern Pennsylvania in relation to historic industrial SO2 air pollution exposure. Marble tombstone weathering is measured and mapped on the regional scale using a level of spatial resolution achievable in few places. The comparatively high mean rate of marble weathering in small town cemeteries suggests that recent acidic precipitation may be dissolving the stones throughout the study region or that pollution from home coal and oil furnaces was high.
