The influence of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation and other teleconnections on winter storms in the North American Northeast - A case study

Auteur :
DUPIGNY-GIROUX, L.-A.

Description :
This paper seeks to explore the complexity of the interactions between the synoptic environments under which winter storms in the northeast develop and the ways in which hemispheric and inter-hemispheric forcings can promote/modify the embedded flow via a case study comparison between the Blizzard of 1996 and the Ice Storm of 1998. These 2 storms were selected because they occurred during opposing ENSO phases. The effects of teleconnections and sea surface temperature anomalies in the North Atlantic Ocean will also be examined, especially in terms of the ways in which blocking patterns and changes in the jet stream locations were influenced.
