Description :
This paper is an exploratory analysis of the frequency distribution of dry spells of various lengths and of their spatial variation. The whole of the southern United States was considered, with data for 1950 to 1994 for 154 stations, so that a range of climatic regimes could be incorporated. This allowed the establishment of tentative explanatory links between the dry-spell regimes and the regional synoptic climatology. Separate analysis for winter and summer were undertaken.
