Description :
This paper examines the potential for using limited meteorological observations in conjunction with an atmospheric circulation index to simulate and forecast the generation of natural inflows into 2 large alpine hydroelectric-storage reservoirs, situated in the central Southern Alps, New Zealand. Multiple regression analysis is used to develop empirical expressions that explain a high percentage of both monthly and seasonal variance in natural inflows to both lakes, Pukaki and Tekapo. Finally, a water-balance study is presented to determine the contribution made to natural inflows by the long-term retreat of glaciers and perennial snowfields.
