Progress in the study of desertification in China

The study of desertification in China began in 1977 with the UN Conference on Desertification. This article reviews progress over the last five years in China. A brief description of desertification research in China is given, and developments and changes in the definition of desertification described. Finally, the causes and patterns of desertification are discussed.
