Description :
This article critically reviews past and present concepts relating to plant communities, the transitional areas and boundaries between them and highlights the potential of a variety of methods for future research on this topic. For the purposes of this article, the term transitional areas defines a group of landscape boundaries that represents the zones between plant communities, as opposed to the sharper demarcations that usually occur between land-use types. Transitional areas therefore represent a subset of landscape boundaries.
