Description :
In this paper, progress in understanding the interannual variability of the atmosphere over southern Africa and its association with the surrounding oceans is reviewed. First, the quasi-periodic nature of interannual rainfall variability of the region during the twentieth century is described. The atmospheric characteristics of wet and dry years are then described and related to changes in the disposition of major rain-producing weather systems. Finally, evidence for long-term trends in important climatic parameters during the period of instrumental records is surveyed.
