This article presents a brief review of the origins and types of large-scale spatial and temporal fluctuations in sediment transport phenomena. The potential for using current modelling approaches to quantify the mechanisms controlling this variability is assessed, and areas are identified where such models may be modified to yield improved representations of drainage-basin processes.
