Description :
The aims of this study were (1) to examine soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in both the topsoil and subsoil during plantation forest establishment on marginal arable land and (2) to detect changes in the inorganic carbon (SIC) pool and its distribution along the soil profile following the afforestation of cropland on the loess Plateau. The study area is located in the Ziwuling area of Fuxian County in the Shaanxi province. It is shown that SOC pool increased in both plow layer and subsoil during afforestation and that afforestation redistributed SIC along soil depth without affecting SIC pool.
