Description :
Hazleton was home to the first local government in the US to pass an Illegal Immigration Relief Act which became a model for other cities seeking to implement their own immigration regulations. The residents felt a sense of class downgrading. The ordonnance was central in creating divisions between the native-born population and recent Latino arrivals. The ordonnance served to unify nativ-born white residents by repositioning the town central to the defense of American quality of life. The paper highlights the significance of territorial control and collective identity.
