Diurnal surface temperature regimes in mountain environments

Common systems for land-surface temperature assessments based on satellite imagery or infrared radiometers can only provide temperature snapshots with limited temporal and spatial resolution. This study uses landscape thermograms from a thermal infrared camera for producing daily temperature cycles of mountainous land surfaces for different seasons of the year. Specifically tested are surface temperature variations between land-cover types and elevation zones, surface temperatures of abiotic structures in relation to biotic structures, land-surface temperatures in relation to air temperatures and seasonal differences of temperature ranges. The study, in the Stubai Valley (North Tyrol) showed strong relationships between nighttime air and surface temperatures and for land surfaces with tall vegetation. Short vegetation showed stronger relations to radiation and was less coupled to the atmosphere.
