Description :
After graduating in chemistry, Eva Taylor taught science and then studied geography at the University of Oxford, where she was trained in the holistic conception of the discipline. She then wrote successful textbooks for schoolchildren, while holding part-time lectureships in London. In 1921, she joined the staff of Birkbeck College, in the University of London, where she would spend the rest of her career. In 1930, she was appointed to the chair of geography in that college and, as such, was the first female professor of geography in the British Isles. She pioneered research into the history of geographical thought and practice, submitted important evidence on the location of industrial activity, which would be of value in national planning after World War II, and then, in a very active retirement, turned her energies to research in the history of science and the history of navigation. – (HC)
