This paper presents differences in and trends for amounts of industrial and municipal wastewater being discharged into surface water in Polish towns and cities. The research encompasses the period from 1990 (the beginning of the economic transformation in Poland) through to 2009, and is based on data on amounts of wastewater discharged into surface water published by the Central Statistical Office. These data reveal how the research period was associated with a considerable decrease in amounts of wastewater discharged into surface water. The research period brought an increase in the number of towns and cities included within this hazard category. The most marked change characterised the last decade of the 20th century. – (BJ)
