This article indicates the main directions to research being pursued by academic institutions of United States, United Kingdom, Canada, The Netherlands, Australia and Germany. They are a part of departments belonging to the natural sciences, or on rare occasions to the human or social sciences. While the thematic structure of geographical studies is greatly diversified, there is an overall prevalence of socio-economic research topics. Physico-geographical research studies are often combined with investigations carried out by non-geographical scientific institutions of an interdisciplinary nature. Physical geography in particular seems to have much stronger bonds with related sciences than socio-economic geography. – (BJ)
