Auteur :
KOWALSKI, M.

Description :
The Commonwealth of the Two Natioins (i.e. Poland and Lithuania) lacked colonies of its own, but nevertheless represented a source of many emigrants participating in Dutch colonial ventures, inter alia in South Africa. While the numbers involved were small in absolute terms, so was the total number of settlers and soldiers, with the result that the the Polish-Lithuanian contribution can be seen as significant. Furthermore, Poles (mostly Polish Prussians) were involved in the formation of new communities, in exploration and in the development of the country overall. They co-organized a pioneering expedition to the hinterland and participated in the first armed clash with the Bantu (Xhosa) people. – (BJ)
