The aim of this study was to examine the types and sizes of weathering features on surfaces of different ages, on similar rock types, from coastal and inland sites. The AA. looked at recent statues and stone buildings, colonial buildings and European colonial gravestones, ancient Hindu temples, Jain rock cut temples and bas reliefs, prehistoric iron and bronze age megaliths, and natural outcrops. Ancient charnockite megaliths have weathering pits and the old inselberg surfaces have large tafoni. The AA. believe that at the same time as the pits are enlarging, the surfaces are exfoliating, that removes the smaller pits. But the small pits do not reform on the old surfaces. This strongly suggests that something is preventing the development of new pits that might be used to conserve ancient stone monuments.
