Understanding geographical variations in road traffic fatalities in South Africa

Auteurs :
SUKHAI, A.
JONES, A.P.

Description :
South Africa faces an unprecedented burden of injuries from road traffic crashes, yet the distribution of these events has not been intensively studied. An examination of road traffic fatalities from 2002 to 2006 was undertaken with regard to a wide range of physical, environmental and socio-economic characteristics. An area measure of violence and crime was shown to be a significant predictor of fatal accidents in addition to driver behaviour, traffic exposure and socio-economic deprivation. - (AJC)
