Description :
The severe destruction caused by gully erosion in the lowlands of Lesotho is well known. In order to overcome this answers to hard questions are required. This paper seeks to answer three such questions in the Maphutseng catchment namely : why is gullying happening ? Can we do anything about it? And is action worthwhile? An examination of aerial photographs between 1957 and 2004 indicated where new gullying took place and the reasons were ascertained for this. Suggestions are offered. - (AJC)
