Description :
This article is a historical analysis of the connections of nationalism, biogeography, internationalism, and conservationism in Brazil in the 1930s and 1940s. Focusing on the works of the Brazilian zoologist Cândido de Mello Leitão, it argues that the study of zoogeography allowed him to adopt an innovative and complex approach to Brazilian fauna. His analyses placed ephemeral human history and political frontiers within the larger scale of geological time and the history of life on Earth. Despite his initial nationalist conception of nature, Mello Leitão questioned the temporal and geographic limits of the Brazilian nation and came closer to the increasingly internationalist perspective of conservationism.
