Elizabeth Simcoe (1762–1850) voyagea de l’Angleterre vers le Canada en 1791 et retourna chez elle au Wolford Lodge à Honiton, Devon, en 1796. Elle accompagnait son mari, John Graves Simcoe (1752–1806), qui venait d’être nommé lieutenant-gouverneur de la nouvelle province du Haut Canada. Tout au long de leur voyage, Elizabeth décrivit ses expériences canadiennes dans ses journaux intimes et ses carnets de croquis. Elle dessina, corrigea, et copia des cartes pour son mari. Dès leur retour en Angleterre, ils offrirent au roi un album de 32 œuvres et une carte, toutes dessinées sur de l’écorce de bouleau. La carte et l’album faisaient office de rapport au roi sur les réalisations politiques de son mari et sur son implication en tant que cartographe.#Elizabeth Simcoe (1762–1850) travelled from England to Canada in 1791 and returned to her home, Wolford Lodge, in Honiton, Devon, in 1796. She was accompanying her husband, John Graves Simcoe (1752–1806), who had just been appointed Lieutenant Governor of the newly formed province of Upper Canada. Throughout their travels, Elizabeth recorded her Canadian experiences in her diaries and sketchbooks. She drew, corrected and copied maps for her husband. Upon their return to England they offered to the king an album of 32 works and a map, all drawn on birch bark. The map and the album acted as a report to the king of her husband’s political achievements in Canada and her engagement as a cartographer.
