In the paper a new practical land capability assessment procedure is tested for two embayments of the Lower Kapos floodplain, where the topography, soil and groundwater conditions have been surveyed. This assessment is supplemented with land suitability analyses focusing on some crops, of moderate significance nationally but still potentially important locally (in the case of the Kapos floodplain : horseraddish, garden valerian and marshmallow). In comparison to the changes in the pattern of agricultural land use proposed here on the basis of the assessment, a complex floodplain rehabilitation project is a more desirable, though more expensive, alternative on the longer term. - (AM)
