The Blitz and its Legacy : wartime destruction to post-war reconstruction

Auteurs :
CLAPSON, M.
LARKHAM, P.J.

Description :
Taking the Blitz on London in 1940 as its starting point, this edited volume presents a geographical, historical and cultural commentary on the immediate and longer term impacts of wartime reconstruction following World War II. It traces how the immediate challenge of providing emergency housing and services was tackled in various ways, and how the issue of permanent reconstruction was resolved, often after much contested debate among local people and members of the architectural and planning professions. Fourteen chapters examine destruction and reconstruction in the United Kingdom (London, Birmingham, Plymouth), France (the Nord, Alsace and Lorraine), Germany, and the cities of Japan. - (HC)
