Description :
Bill Talbot was a significant figure in developing the academic discipline of geography in South Africa and its application to a range of contemporary issues. Trained at the University of London, Talbot taught first in Scotland and migrated to Cape Town in 1936, where he set about establishing the subject in the fledgling department of geography in that city’s university. His most significant contribution was to furthering an understanding of the relationship between people and their environments. His magnum opus was the monumental Atlas of the Union of South Africa, compiled over several decades and published in 1960. - (HC)
