This article analyses nostalgia and the city from the following perspectives: the one yearning for the good old days; the one analyzing the speed of metropolitan development and the one with regard the idea of progress, confronting both architects and novelists as well. It concludes that the writer, among which Marcel Proust’s work is easily recognizable, is aware of the time required for urban processes to emerge in human settlements but that he has no power to modify the future of the city.
